The BET awards 2018 are bringing something special to the platform of the people of color. Not only is are the awards being hosted by Jamie Foxx, who is promising to open up ‘Blackanda’ this time around, a play on Wakanda from Black Panther, which is a place where you are African American, and proud of it, but there is also a remarkable list of performers who will be setting the stage on fire come summer. The BET awards are already set apart in their honoring of the arts curated by the black community, and this year’s iteration stands out for its extraordinary line up of performances.
Among performers, we have Nicki Minaj, the queen of rap. Minaj is known for her vivified rapping style, her stream specifically. She regularly consolidates analogies, turns of phrase and wordplay into her work, which has been contrasted with her guide Lil Wayne. The New York Times called Minaj “a sparkling rapper with a gift for comic accents and unexpected turns of phrase. She’s a walking exaggeration, outsize in sound, personality and look. And she’s a rapid evolver, discarding old modes as easily as adopting new ones.” Although numerous faultfinders portray her procedure as bubblegum rap, Minaj stated: “What people don’t know is that before I was doing that craziness I was doing me, I was just doing regular sounding rap that anyone could hear and identify with. But once I started doing all that weird shit—I’m not mad at it because it got everyone’s attention.”
Also, part of the line-up includes the rapper Meek Mill. Meek Mill is an American rapper and musician. Brought up in Philadelphia, he set out on his music vocation as a fight rapper, and later shaped a brief rap gathering, The Bloodhoundz. In 2008, Atlanta-based rapper T.I. marked Meek Mill to his first record bargain. I have something to learn and to teach, and it’s just about how do we get at the same table?” The line-up will also feature the YG, Daniel Caesar, Jay Rock, Yolanda Adams, 2 Chainz, Migos and H.E.R.
